The December Streets are starting off their new musical era with a bang! Their latest single ‘Same Faces’ became a radio hit here in South Africa and featured on renowned playlists around the world with particular support from the Netherlands, Belgium & Germany. Now, they’ve announced that their new album ‘Last Forever’ will drop on 8 July – and they’ve premiered their new single ‘Caught By Surprise’ to celebrate.
Working alongside renowned producer Paul Gala of Bad Future Records, December Streets has crafted a revealing record which will give fans a deeper look into their lives. The track is packed with the emotions unleashed through an unexpected and unforgivable betrayal. The record speaks to an active push and pull between love and the betrayal of trust. Ultimately the moment one discovers a painful truth.
“While writing this album, we journeyed through valleys of dark emotions and flew through clouds on elated highs, each record speaking a truth. ‘Caught by surprise’ was a darker truth for me personally. We all deal with hurt in our own way, my way was through this song. It helped me capture and express my feelings of betrayal, embarrassment and hurt in the most natural way I could,” says Tristan Coetzee, band front man.
The single gives fans a deeper look into the band’s personal life as well as their ever-evolving sound and character. The album ‘Last Forever’ takes listeners on a sonic and lyrical journey, from the anthemic pop-punk sounds of their latest acclaimed single ‘Same faces’ through to the pop-funk, emotional ballad ‘Caught By Surprise’ – which challenges your ears while simultaneously sparking an unshakable groove in your hips.
“The record is a stark contrast between the story it unpacks and the nostalgic, feel-good vibe of the music. We know the record was written from a dark, healing place -but also know that it was written as a way to overcome hurt -so we decisively wrote the music to encapsulate and incubate this healing with a groove you cannot help but feel good and dance to,” says Matthew Tager, band vocalist.
One is plunged into a vulnerability expressed by the band, unlike anything we’ve heard from December Streets before. The hard-hitting lyrics are unmistakably relatable, knitted seamlessly together by the nostalgic, feel-good music which elevates the track to new heights for December Streets. “This is truly a piece of music and expression our fan’s will not have heard before from December Streets,” comments band guitarist, Niel Markgraaff.
Tristan Coetzee adds a final word on the single, saying “This record is the ultimate teaser for our new album ‘Last Forever.’ “Same Faces” brought our energy and fun to the foreground. ‘Caught By Surprise’ exposes us on a more emotional level. A little taster for a jam-packed audio journey the album captures. I hope this song speaks to others the way it speaks to me each time I hear or perform it.
