December Streets Unpack Deteriorating Relationships On New Single ‘Same Faces’

Local indie pop group December Streets are back with a bang! The group has just announced that they will be dropping their new album in March this year and to celebrate, they’ve premiered their catchy new hit ‘Same Faces’.

Digging into the meaning of the song, the group explain that the lyrics speak to monotony, repetition and the slow eradication of a relationship. To the point where you do not recognise the person you once knew. You barely even recognise yourself. You’re faces become the same repetitive face, in a spiralling fall to the inevitable.

‘While the theme of the song speaks to a fairly gloomy situation, it is in fact a call for help at the point of realisation that something is not clicking anymore. A turning point before things get too bad. A way out of a repetitive, toxic cycle – to live again!’ says Matthew Tager, band vocalist.

As the song thunders through, we hear in the verse how the song takes a turn for the better – calling out to a need for change. A burst of energy and hunger for a life we all once knew and loved.

The band attributes the ‘Same Faces’ creation to a common testing ground many relationships were forced to endure during the pandemic – Lockdown. With the reality of relationships of all walks of life being put to the ultimate stress test through long periods of time in confined spaces – the track talks to the immanent nature of blending into one life, one character and one face. . . for better or worse.

‘Lockdown over the past 2 years gave us all time to reflect on ourselves and the relationships we hold dear to us. For most of us locked in with a partner, friend or family member, that relationship truly got put to the test! This period of time is when we really saw the good and bad, maniacal and sane, patient and impatient side of the people we were locked in with. I poured myself into writing and felt it relevant to write about this topic. Many of my friend’s relationships did not make it through lockdown, but those that did I think will stand the test of time. This period was a wake-up call for many of us.’ says Tristan Coetzee, band frontman.

Band vocalist Dane Steinhobel adds that he knows the group has something special with this release. ‘I often wonder what global superstars such as One Republic or Coldplay do when they realise they’ve written to their best potential and cooked up a true hit…I really believe we’ve done that with this one,” he says. ‘Same Faces’ is going to be a game-changer for us, I cannot wait for our fans and community to hear the magic we’ve worked into this song. It’s incredibly relatable to most of the world over the last two years and I mean, the music BANGS!’.
