Beatenberg’s Matthew Field Embarks On New Solo Adventure

In case you missed it, Beatenberg frontman Matthew Field, who now performs under the stage name M Field, has been on an exciting solo adventure. With two singles already under his belt, the star dropped his third single ‘Andrew’ a few weeks ago – and has just announced that his upcoming EP drops globally on 2 September.

“The obvious question – who is Andrew? Like in dreams, in songs everyone is you. But also nothing I say outside of my songs is actually true,” M Field explains. “The key of Andrew is to D major as 95bpm is to 98bpm – I slowed it down a little bit. The song started with the chorus and it took me a while to find the right verse. I really like the end bit with all the orchestral instruments and hope to do more stuff like that.”

‘Andrew’ follows the singles ‘Gargoyle’ and ‘Leafy Outlook’ – both of such did reasonably well on local radio.

Now, the star is putting the final touches on the upcoming EP. “In making an album there is kind of a tension between attention to the part and attention to the whole,” the star says. “In this case I started with attention to each song – some were picked out from old demos and reworked, some were more freshly written. And of course, as time goes on and work is done things begin to cohere in unexpected ways, connections appear that can be strengthened.”

He adds “Working with producer Bullion also led to more sonic unity, and inspired me to write into that further as I make songs to come. I am calling it simply M Field partly because I like the convention of the eponymous first album, and also because it is the truest way of naming what is common to all the songs. Even more important though is that the songs also give meaning to my name, and in that way name me.”
