You may remember Ashlinn Gray from her hit singles ‘Battleships’ and ‘Chex Ballet’ which she released earlier this year. As we head into spring, the singer will be releasing her highly-anticipated new single ‘Nineteen’. The song will be sent to radio as well as release on all digital platforms this Friday but ahead of the song’s release, we caught up with the star who opened up about the inspiration behind the new song.
“Nineteen is about making the most of a seemingly insignificant year and not leaving the kid inside behind,” the singer explains. “I’ve never looked forward to the age nineteen and I realised it was because society doesn’t have any expectations on that year which made it seem so insignificant. So as a challenge to myself, I wanted to make it a year where I really chased my dreams, with childlike faith. Sometimes we have to chase our dreams the way we used to chase paper planes.”
Ashlinn is known for her deep lyrics and strong vocals but while her other tracks have played within the adult contemporary genre, ‘Nineteen’ will be a bit different. “Nineteen is a lot more pop. It involves more beats, it’s more quirky and fresh,” the singer reveals.
Although the singer will be releasing ‘Nineteen’ as her next official single, it isn’t the only new material she has been working on recently. Ashlinn teamed up with rapper Dr. Bone on a track called ‘Need Your Love’ which was part of the new season of e.tv’s Coke Studio. Then, Ashlinn also wrote an emotional song called ‘Finding Home’ which was released on RADA Unearthed’s compilation album. “RADA Unearthed is an organisation for those who have battled with rape, alcohol, drugs and abuse. ‘Finding Home’ is a song about letting go of the things that hold us back from being the best version of ourselves,” the singer says.
Ashlinn is an incredibly talented musician and we’re excited to hear what she has in store with the new single. Remember to support local music by buying the song on iTunes this Friday.
