Rapper and hip-hop icon LL Cool J is stepping into the spotlight as the official host for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. While he co-hosted the show alongside Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow in 2022, this marks the first time LL will take the VMA stage as the show’s sole emcee.
The move solidifies LL’s deep and storied connection to the VMAs. He first took home a Moonperson in 1991 for his classic track “Mama Said Knock You Out,” and made history six years later as the first rapper to ever receive the coveted Video Vanguard Award. His presence has been a staple in recent years, with memorable performances at the last two telecasts: an all-star salute to hip-hop’s 50th anniversary in 2023, and a 40th-anniversary tribute to Def Jam Recordings in 2024 that featured a surprise appearance from Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Flavor Flav.
Beyond the VMAs, LL is no stranger to the demands of live television hosting. He famously emceed the Grammy Awards for five consecutive years from 2012 to 2016, proving his ability to command a room and navigate the high-stakes environment of a major awards show.
This year’s ceremony holds special significance for the rapper, as his single “Murdergram Deaux” featuring Eminem, from his 2024 album THE FORCE, is nominated for best hip-hop.
The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards nominations are led by pop powerhouse Lady Gaga, who scored a staggering 12 nods. Her “Die With a Smile” duet partner Bruno Mars follows closely with 11 nominations. Other top contenders include Kendrick Lamar (10), ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter (eight each), Ariana Grande and The Weeknd (seven each), and Billie Eilish (six).
