Zedd rocked the Ultra South Africa stage last year and while we missed him this year, the American DJ has consistently delivered hit after hit. After teaming up with Hailee Steinfeld on her smash hit ‘Starving’, the German producer teams up with the talented , young vocalist ‘Alessia Cara’ on his brand new single ‘Stay’ – the first single off his upcoming third studio album.
The song is the perfect mix of EDM and pop which will undoubtedly set radio and clubs alight with its infectiousness. Zedd doesn’t stray too far from the production style we’ve grown accustomed to from him. The song starts off subtly as Alessia powerfully showcases her vocals. The chorus is almost split into two parts – the main vocal part which features an excessive use of autotune (which although usually puts me off, really works) before the producer delivers an instrumental counterpart with the signature production style mentioned earlier. The song tells the tale of two people on the verge of a breakup and although the song is weak lyrically, the catchy composition makes for a perfect pop track.
“I think this song is right in the middle between where Alessia is musically and where I am and that’s what’s so exciting about it,” Zedd said about the release. “I’ve been trying to knock down barriers around music genres and this is another step for me to walk towards a musical future where I can create any genre I want without people putting me in a box.” Alessia adds that “It still feels like me, just an elevated pop sound. I don’t know that I would be this bold on my own stuff so it’s cool to try these things with collaborators.” The song is quickly climbing the charts and is expected to be a massive hit for the two.
