After dropping the hits ‘One More Night’ with Josh Wantie and ‘Under’, local production duo Wax Beach, consisting of Jamie Christensen and Tiaan du Toit, are back with a new sound as they team up with Chad Saaiman on their new single ‘How Many Likes’.
The new single sees the duo experiment with their sound a little bit more as they head into a dreamy, R&B sound blended with alternative pop in a commercial and current way. The single is a personal one for the duo and Chad as they explore the impact social media has had on the way they live their lives.
Jamie adds that social media helped him discover Chad’s music. “I discovered Chad’s single ‘Recovery’ by chance while browsing Instagram’s explore page. We decided to send him a DM asking if he was up for a collaboration, and to our surprise he responded, and the rest is history,” he explains. Meanwhile Tiaan said that this inspired the lyrical content of the song. “During our first meeting with Chad, he pitched the concept of critiquing how some people use social media for attention, and how it is not necessary to rely on external validation in order to have meaningful and fulfilling experiences. We loved the idea and this is the core message of the song,” Tiaan tells us.
Chad adds that “Seeing that Wax Beach discovered my music on Instagram’s explore page, I decided to write a song about social media and the false affirmation it can create in a social sphere. Now I, for one, do use IG for business and brand collaborations, and with saying that – it is what you make of it.”
