We’ve seen it with artists like P. Diddy and Snoop Dogg and now, Tumi is changing his name and reinvents himself as Stogie T as he readies a tour, a new single ‘Diamond Walk’ and a self-titled album that signifies the powerful SA Hip Hop Movement.
The rapper reveals he’s not the man he was 10 years ago. A lot has changed and he believes it’s time to start a new chapter. Stogie T reveals that his new music won’t be as serious as he has been known to be but, instead, will offer a perfect balance of “depth, consciousness and entertaining new generation Mzansi Hip-Hop. This offering is a true indicator of the success of the genre in South Africa and beyond.” The rapper’s reinvention speaks to “the new generation with a sound inspired by today’s finest talent in hip-hop, production and lyricism.”
Although his name is changing, Tumi will still be releasing some of the highest quality hip-hop in the industry – something he has been doing since he burst onto the scene in 2004. Stogie T has released an album every year since his debut either as a solo project, with The Volume or a side-project and in 2016, he’s excited for South Africa to hear what he has been working on this time around.
The rapper will release his new self-titled album on the 25th of November and it promises to be one of the best he’s ever made. The album’s lyrical themes steer towards an economic freedom. This means booking holidays at off-shore hotels and affording whatever his partner wants, as he tells us in the lead single ‘Diamond Walk’ and ‘Big Dreams’, or zoning in on the life his mother carved out for him by highlighting her cause. “I see your sacrifice in my children’s eyes. They were born free. Incredible!” he exclaims in the intro to “Son of a soldier”. This goes a long way to humanize a concept that mainly exists in a vacuum, obscured from actuality by smoke screens, haunted by a legacy of stale and regurgitated tales told by former slaves who are now oppressive masters.
Naturally, Stogie T will be collaborating with Mzansi’s finest rappers on the record such as Da L.E.S, Nadia Nakai, Yanga, AKA and more. The rapper has also revealed that he plans to continue nurturing new talent under his record label Motif Records – the label which helped put artists such as Reason, Riky Rick,The Soil, AKA and Nasty C on the map. Get ready, the Stogie T story begins on the 25th of November.
