Mzansi is still mourning the passing of Tokollo ‘Magesh’ Tshabalala but his legacy lives on through his music. The star was working on a number of new tracks before he died and today, we finally get to hear one of these tracks.
The track is a showcase of Tokollo’s ability to play with various sonic elements while maintaining the power of his hooks as someone best known for his songwriting ability. ‘Bigger Than us’ thus, helps sustain this status. A characteristic typical to Magesh was his forward-thinking lyricism, while the song presented offers Kwaito-like vocal delivery, seemingly misplaced, upon the second and third listens one sees that single ‘Bigger Than Us’ offers a uniquely different iteration of kwaito and ‘black music as a whole.
‘Bigger Than Us’, to the long-time Tokollo Magesh fan as well as the avid music listener would find this sound a surprise, but to close family this effort is and was quite fitting to someone who always looked to honor the music and its expression in totality.
It is thus an honor to be gifted the privilege to get a glimpse and experience Tokollo Magesh’s play in various musical spaces in the last chapter of his physical incarnation. The musical legend, Magesh, alongside his family and producer and friend Richardt Mare has granted Warner Music Africa stewardship over the project which is to be distributed by the record company, a label Magesh had approached as his 1st option for the release of his last album leaving it to his family to continue the legacy with this partnership.
