The Weeknd And Anitta Unite For Halloween Anthem ‘São Paulo’

What a collaboration! R&B superstar The Weeknd debuts his highly anticipated new single and music video for ‘São Paulo’ – his new collaboration with Brazilian superstar Anitta. Directed by the visionary FREEKA, the video takes a dark, jarring turn as Anitta, who is pregnant in the storyline, reveals an ever-emerging face within her belly. This bizarre and haunting imagery amplifies another bold visual chapter for The Weeknd. Alongside the video premiere, “São Paulo” will be available on all streaming platforms worldwide.

The song came about after The Weeknd asked Anitta for a vocal recording to complement his set last October when he performed two nights in São Paulo during his After Hours Til Dawn Tour. “What she sent was so awesome that we created the song,” The Weeknd said. The two debuted “São Paulo” in the titular city’s Estádio MorumBIS on Sept. 7 during a special one-night-only show that was livestreamed. “We knew it was too special to just play on stage. We saw great potential in the song and found the beat, which is the heart of the show,” he added of ‘São Paulo’.

“I wrote some verses as a joke and never imagined they would become serious. Suddenly, I received the finished song. I loved it! I felt very honored and flattered,” Anitta told Billboard Brazil. “I’ve always been a big fan of his and his work. I never imagined this would happen, and now it’s a dream come true. It’s a little more Brazilian funk, as promised, around the world.”

The release of ‘São Paulo’ follows a series of record-breaking accomplishments for The Weeknd. He recently surpassed his own record as the artist with the highest monthly listeners on Spotify, with over 120 million monthly listeners. This milestone comes on the heels of chart-topping releases like ‘Timeless’ featuring Playboi Carti, produced by Pharrell Williams, which debuted in the top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and ‘Dancing in the Flames’. Both tracks are set to appear on his upcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow.
