The old Taylor Swift is dead! The former country star veered towards a pop sound on her latest album ‘1989’ and now, as she readies the release of her upcoming sixth studio album ‘Reputation’, Taylor shows off her dark side on the lead single off the project ‘Look What You Made Me Do’.
On first listen, the star’s change in direction does come as a bit of a shock, however, Taylor as said she is ready to experiment and take her music to a place it’s never been before. Darker, edgier music has become incredibly trendy over the past few years and we heard a glimpse of thid approach when Taylor teamed up with Zayn on ‘I Don’t Want To Live Forever’ – a song that peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
On the song, Taylor reacts to all the negative publicity she received over the past few years. “I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time,” she sings in the chorus. The song is reportedly a dig at Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. “I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined,” she declares. “I check it once, then I check it twice. Ooh, look what you made me do.”
‘Look What You Made Me Do’ isn’t the pop banger we were all hoping for, however, it shows a grown-up, more mature Taylor who is expressing herself through song. It’s been three years since ‘1989’ was released and it’s great to see just how much the star has grown. If anything else, it’s made us incredibly excited to hear what else she has cooked up in studio over the past few months…
