Earlier this month, Taylor Swift released her version of her platinum-selling album ‘Fearless’. Featuring rerecorded versions of the tracks as well as six new songs (including a collaboration with Keith Urban), the album is zooming to the top of the charts. One new track that has everyone talking is ‘Mr Perfectly Fine’ – a song about a boy who quickly moved on after a break-up – and fans have theories on who it may be about.
Joe Jonas is the likeliest contender as Swifties have connected the “Mr. Perfectly Fine” lyric, “Mr. ‘Looked me in the eye and told me you would never go away'” to two of her previous songs about Jonas: her Fearless track “Forever & Always” (“You looked me in the eye and told me you loved me/ Were you just kidding?”) and her Speak Now song “Last Kiss” (“You told me you loved me/ So why did you go away?”)
More so, the timeline matches up since the two dated from July to October 2008. When promoting the album 13 years ago, Taylor told Ellen DeGeneres “I’m not even gonna be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18,” and when she returned in May 2019 she described the “most rebellious thing” she did as a teenager was “put Joe Jonas on blast on your show.”
Meanwhile, some believe the song is about Jake Gyllenhaal as the lyrics between the new song and “All Too Well” from her 2012 album ‘Red’ connect. The chorus of “Mr. Perfectly Fine” includes the line “Hello Mr. ‘Casually Cruel,'” which resembles the bridge of “All Too Well” when she sings, “And you call me up again just to break me like a promise/ So casually cruel in the name of being honest.”
Thirdly, others believe the song is about John Mayer. Lyric “Mr. ‘Everything revolves around you’ draws back to her ‘Speak Now’ track “Dear John” that starts off with the lyric, “Long were the nights when/ My days once revolved around you.”
While the muse remains a mystery, what we do know is that this song is a certified bop!
