Tamara Dey On Her New Single ‘Disco Therapy’, Her Passion For Disco and House Music And Her Upcoming EP

Mzansi’s first lady of house music is back! Tamara Dey has taken the house scene by storm thanks to her smooth vocals and vibrant approach to the genre. Her new single ‘Disco Damage’ is gearing up to be another hit for the musician and as she enters a new chapter in her career, Tamara opens up about the new track, the power of music and so much more.

What inspired the lyrical content of your new single ‘Disco Therapy’?

Disco Therapy is all about self-love, unapologetic self-expression, looking inward, healing and the importance of human connection

What does ‘Disco Therapy mean to you?

Music has always been the greatest healing force for me. The world has been through so much and it’s an important time to lean in to self-love and into music.

What is it about the disco genre that speaks to you?

A little-known fact is that the original meaning of the word ‘Disco’ was used in the late 60’s and early 70’s to describe a sound of music played in LGBTQ spaces. In the 80’s Disco then morphed in to what we now know and love as house music. I love this sound because disco and house music have always awakened a feeling of unity and freedom with in our hearts and minds.

You’ve been in the industry for many years now, how has the industry changed for you over the last few years?

As an industry, we are coming out of some very challenging times but music is not going anywhere and as artists we adapt and evolve along with our ever changing and growing industry.

Tell me about your process. How do you find inspiration when working on the idea of a new song?

I source my inspiration from life, personal experiences and pop culture. The main objective is simple. Make people feel better through the power of music and give them the feeling of love, joy and hope

Now that you’ve released your first song, is there a plan for an EP or album?

Yes indeed. I have a second single ready. It’s an afro-disco cover of a Brenda Fassie classic that I’ve always wanted to release and then an EP with some awesome collabs to follow there after. Watch this space!
