He blew me away on the first season of The Voice South Africa and now, winner Richard Stirton has finally dropped his highly-anticipated debut single ‘What Tears Me The Most’. The song serves as the lead single off his upcoming debut album with Universal Music South Africa – the contract which was included in his prize for winning the reality show and if the album sounds anything close to the first single, we’re in for a treat!
Richard has already seen two tracks hit the number one spot – his cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s hit track ‘The Sound of Silence’ as well as his cover of Michael Jackson’s smash hit ‘Billie Jean’. So, it was no surprise that when he dropped ‘What Tears Me The Most’, it shot to the top of the local iTunes charts as well. The song is a perfect introduction to who Richard is. The song has a lot of substance lyrically and Richard puts his vocals on full display. I love how Richard shows off both the sweet and rough tones in his voice here – something that definitely gained him a lot of fans during the show. The singer does an amazing job in the studio and it’s clear that he has another smash hit on his hands.
The song was written by Brit Awarding winning artist James Bay and seems to be the perfect fit for Richard. “I hope that people are able to connect with the song on a number of levels, but especially a lyrical connection, because at the end of the day music is all about the message,” Richard said of the song. “These have been the most surreal last few months and I cannot believe I finally have the opportunity to start releasing original music. I am feeling very blessed and I hope that everybody enjoys the music I have to share.” Richard is currently working on material for a full length album set for release in early August.
