Dance Affairs (Warner Music)
Breakdown: You may remember ZakEmo as a finalist on SABC 1’s hit reality show ‘1s and 2s’ but after creating and producing music for other artists, ZakEmo has finally released his debut album ‘Dance Affairs’. The album includes the lead single ‘Ingane Zabantu’ featuring D.O.G. and it’s making waves on the local dance front.
How Many Good Tracks: 11 of the 14.
What I Liked: This is African dance music at it’s best. ZakEmo experiments with different sounds and beats that are popular within the local dance space and has some talented vocalists who add their different flair to the tracks. ZakEmo understand his market and what his audiences expect from him and he delivered. What sets ZakEmo apart is that he also plays live drums during a show which adds a performance element to his set – something not many DJs pull off. This is African house with an edge and it’s a solid debut from the DJ.
What I Didn’t Like: There are moments on the album where ZakEmo plays it a little too safe. I would have liked to see him step outside of his comfort zone a bit more.
