Review: Trolls

A fun, colourful reintroduction to the two-decade old Troll phenomenon.

Starring: Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake

Plot: Princess Poppy and Branch live in a colourful, wondrous world where infectiously upbeat Trolls always feel a song coming on… only to find their optimistic way of life under threat. The crazy and cute duo embark on a hair-raising quest to save their world from the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are never happy until they have a troll in their belly.

Remarks: This is a story about happiness. Animation usually has a lesson younger audiences take home and, this time, it’s all about positivity and looking after your friends. There was a whole lot of things the film did right. Firstly, as you can see in the trailer below, the animation is phenomenal. There is so much detail not only in the trolls themselves, but every aspect in a scene. It’s great to see just how far animation has come and the studio did a phenomenal job here. Justin Timberlake came on board as the executive music director and musically, the film shines. Sure, I thought that there was a little too much singing at times, but I can’t complain when the music this good. Justin and Anna Kendrick gave an epic rendition of ‘True Colours’ in the film that gave me goosies. It really elevated the scene and helps audiences feel the emotion behind it. However, as much as this is a highly enjoyable film, it’s not all cupcakes and rainbows. The story wasn’t incredibly strong. I feel the producers could have done so much more with the film and added more layers to the overall production. Also, I can’t help but feel this film should have been released years ago. Truthfully, kids 10 and younger have probably never played with a Troll before and something about releasing the film to an audience that isn’t familiar with the product doesn’t sit right with me. Despite this, I really enjoyed the movie. It’s clever, funny, inspiring and has a feel-good vibe to it. I’d definitely like to see this expand into a franchise.

Rating: 3.5/5

Trolls releases on 21 October 2016.
