Tori Kelly
Unbreakable Smile (Universal Music)
Breakdown: American pop star, Tori Kelly, did phenomenally well last year as her singles ‘Nobody Love’ and ‘Should’ve Been Us’ tore up charts all around the world. Produced by mega-producer, Max Martin, Kelly is set to dominate the world of pop in the years to come.
How Many Good Tracks: 12 of the 16.
What I Liked: The album starts off with a short intro which sees Tori showing off her incredible voice over an acoustic guitar. This instantly makes the listener understand that Tori is a fantastic vocalist and that this album isn’t going to be your average pop record. The one thing that I really enjoyed about this album is Tori’s phenomenal songwriting skills. Each and every song gives the listener a different piece of who Tori really is and she articulates this beautifully. The album has an old-school sound to it which, although sounding dated at times, separates her music from the influx of mediocre pop music out at the moment.
What I Didn’t Like: I found, at some parts, Tori was hiding her voice behind big production which was a little annoying since it’s very clear that she has a set of pipes on her. I would have also liked a few more radio-friendly tracks. That being said, this is a great piece of work – especially for a debut album.
Best Track: Should’ve Been Us
