Breakdown: After a short break working on new music, Afrikaans rapper, Snotkop is back with a bang as he releases ‘Cool Soos Koos Kombuis’ – the lead single off his new album ‘HKGK’. The song showed us a different side of the rapper as he showcased a more melodic take on his signature sound.
How Many Good Tracks: 9 of the 14.
What I Liked: Snotkop is known for his comedic take on pop music. His lyrics are silly and beats catchy. It’s what has made the rapper so popular and the singer so, naturally, you can expect a whole lot more of that on ‘HKGK’. I love how unique Snotkop is. There is no other artist like him in South Africa. The production on the album is fire and the rapper has some catchy tracks this time around. Snotkop has perfected his take on both raps and more melodic tracks – something that not many artists are able to do. There are tons of radio his on the record and it’s clear that his fans are going to love this album just as much as his previous records. Oh, and I love how much Snotkop uses the accordion on the album!
What I Didn’t Like: I’d like a bit more substance, lyrically. I understand that Snotkop is known for tongue-in-cheek, catchy bangers and it’s what his audience wants, but he really impressed me on ‘Cool Soos Koos Kombuis’. It was cleverly written and I would like to see him explore more tracks like that in the future. I would also like to see a deeper side of Snotkop. I’m not saying he needs to change his formula, but adding a track or two which give us a better understanding of who he is as a human being would be nice. That being said, this is a perfect party album and yet another great release from the rapper.
