Review: Skrillex – Recess

Skrillex
Recess (Warner Music)

Breakdown: Skrillex pulled a Beyonce on us as he surprisingly released his debut album ‘Recess’ by having his fans download an app. The album was released with ‘Try It Out’ and the album’s title track ‘Recess’ being released to radio however, Ragga Bomb was chosen as the record’s debut single after it’s release and had a fantastic video (which was shot in South Africa) accompany it. The album is Skrillex at his best – dirty beats, Reggae and fantastic house music.

Tracks We Didn’t Skip: 7 of the 11.

What I Liked: Skrillex explored more on this album than on anything else we’ve heard from him. I love the fact that on tracks like ‘Recess’ and ‘Stranger’, there is a hint of something that could be played on mainstream radio and the fact that the record as a whole has a more pop sound to it. Skrillex explores and does what he pleases and a lot of artists would do anything for that kind of freedom, but it seems to be working for him. It’s definitely the best dance music I have heard all year.

What I Didn’t Like: While I like the experimentation on the record, all the instruments and noises on the record are sometimes confusing and just too much that it completely ruins the track. The album is what it is, and if you’re not a Skrillex fan, then best you stay away from this album!

Best Track: The album’s title track is the winner! Who would have thought Fatman Scoop and Skrillex would blend together so nicely!

Rating: 3/5
