Review: Lungi Naidoo – Black Diamond

Local beauty, Lungi Naidoo, is back with her third studio album ‘Black Diamond’. The album includes her smash hit single ‘Falling’ featuring Black Coffee and after years of hard work, it’s finally Lungi’s time to shine.

‘Black Diamond’ is an interesting mix of R&B and house music with African elements evident throughout the record. What is really special about this album is that it’s a very personal one. Lungi sings from her heart and almost every song comes from a personal experience or source of inspiration. This not only gives us a deeper look into who Lungi is as an artist, but it brings out the passion in her vocals as well – which improves the overall quality of the record. Her voice is smooth and silky yet strong – something that gives her that edge.

The production on the record is outstanding. Lungi gives audiences music they can dance to while still showing off her soulful side. Ultimately, this is a dance record but Lungi manages to blur those lines at points which makes this an exciting record. “Niqhapele”, for example, has powerful African elements to it while “Uzobuya” is a beautiful ballad with dance undertones.

Although a great piece of work, Lungi hasn’t done something that hasn’t been tried and tested before. The star plays it safe on this record which, as her first major release, isn’t the worst idea in the world. In the future, I would like to see a bit more of Lungi sonically, not just lyrically.

Lungi has put in a lot of hard work on this record. She is clearly an incredibly talented individual and is finally ready to step into the spotlight. She has done her research and has paid her dues and ‘Black Diamond’ is proof that she has, indeed, got what it takes to make it big.
