Review: Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games

Lord of the Dance has won the hearts and souls of so many around the world but we were a bit sceptical about watching a full Irish dance production. However, after watching Michael Flatley’s production at The Teatro at Montecasino last week, we totally understand the hype! The energy, the sex appeal, the tap dancing, the chemistry – it all works!

Dangerous Games is a classic tale of good versus evil. The story follows a dream Little Spirit has in which the Lord of the Dance must battle The Dark Lord and his Dark Disciples. There are many twists and, of course, a love tale as an epic dance battle commences.

Morgan Comer, who stars as the Lord of the Dance, stole the show. He is so brilliant at dancing and he carried his role so perfectly, leaving the audience at the palm of his hand. While Morgan was truly jaw-dropping, the show’s main strength is when there are at least eight or more dancers on stage. Irish dancing, and the tap dancing in particular, involves a lot of dancers dancing identically to the music. This is enhanced even more in tap dancing and the cast have practised for months to get the steps just right – and it completely blew us away.

A dance show, however, is nothing without the music and the selection of traditional Irish music mixed with great beats to make it sound as current as ever. The dancers not only looked great but they each brought their individual talents to the stage. There was even a duo who played the violin while doing their routine. The only part we didn’t enjoy was the singing. Sure, Rachel O’Connor, who appeared on the latest season of The Voice UK and was the last woman on Kylie Minogue’s team, can sing but we just felt it lowered the show’s energy.

A special treat for viewers attending the show during the first two weeks is that Michael Flatley himself makes an appearance and gives the crowd an unforgettable tap performance at the end of the show. He is so talented and when watching him in action, you will completely understand why he is one of the biggest names in dance.

The show is world-class and we thoroughly enjoyed the performance. We’re signing up for tap-dancing lessons ASAP!

Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games plays at The Teatro at Montecasino until the 9th of August 2015.
