Review: Hotel Transylvania 2

The pack to whatever it takes to keep Mavis, Johnny and Dennis in Transylvania – with hilarious effects.

Starring: Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez

Plot: The Drac pack is back for an all-new monster comedy adventure in Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2! Everything seems to be changing for the better at Hotel Transylvania… Dracula’s rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny – and in for a major cultural shock of her own – “Vampa” Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp. But little do they know that Drac’s grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood – and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania – things are going to get batty!

Remarks: Hotel Transylvania was a brilliant film. The characters, the story, the script was all on point so, naturally, it would be incredibly difficult to produce a sequel for the franchise. Hotel Transylvania has the same awesome characters but it doesn’t come close to the epicness of the first film. Firstly, does anyone else find it so weird how quickly Mavis got pregnant – and by Johnny who doesn’t even have facial hair? I can get over the creepiness of that because Dennis, the baby, adds a great element to the film (which practically revolves around him). That being said, the film just lacked that magic for me. I thought the story was weak and forced and that Drac was so unlike his character in the first film. Yes, I know a lot has changed but these monsters were almost too friendly and/or silly. This doesn’t mean that this is a bad film. There were plenty moments where you will find yourself chuckling in the cinema. It’s also got some great character developments this time around which is always great to see. Just don’t go in with high expectations.

Rating: 2.5/5

Hotel Transylvania 2 releases October 2nd, 2015.
