Diamond Thug
Monday Will Have To Wait (Independent)

Breakdown: There’s an exciting new alternative pop group on the horizon. Cape-Town-based Diamond Thug have just dropped their debut EP ‘Monday Will Have To Wait’ after the success of their current single ‘Long Way’. The band is fronted by local singing sensation Van T.

How Many Good Tracks: 3 of the 6.

What I Liked: Although Van T is experiencing success with her own music, I love how she experiments with her sound under a different name. The lyrics on this EP make the group stand out and each song is more of a poem than a song. Van T shows off her vocal range on this collection of songs and I’m impressed by her versatility.

What I Didn’t Like: While I appreciate what the group is trying to do with this EP, some songs seem to miss the mark. The production could have been a bit stronger and I think the band need to find a balance between the songs they love to make and songs that would get played on radio. Although the lyrical content is great, this isn’t anything fresh.

Best Track: Long Way

Rating: 3/5
