Review: Daya – Sit Still, Look Pretty

Daya
Sit Still, Look Pretty (Sony Music)

Breakdown: She has become one of the most formidable new names in pop music after her hit single ‘Hide Away’ became one of the biggest pop songs of 2016. This year, Daya teamed up with The Chainsmokers on their hit single ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ and dropped ‘Sit Still, Look Pretty’, the second single off her debut album of the same name.

How Many Good Tracks: 8 of the 14.

What I Liked: Daya has delivered a solid debut album. Vocally, the 17-year-old singer shines bright. Her voice is bold, strong and clear which makes it the perfect companion for pop music. So, unsurprisingly, the record is filled with pop bangers which millennials are bound to go gaga over. The tracks are immaculately produced and combine elements of hip-hop, reggae and dance into the overall pop direction the album takes. Daya has certainly caught my attention and I have a feeling this is the beginning of a very long career for the star.

What I Didn’t Like: Although there are some great tracks on the record, Daya plays it safe and, unfortunately, doesn’t help her stand out from the crowd. The album doesn’t have anything that distinguishes the star from more successful pop stars and almost sees the star walk in their shadows. Lyrically, the album could have also used some help. The songs are too cheesy and lack substance to make them appeal to a wide audience.

Best Track: Hide Away

Rating: 3/5
