Newcomer Cece Vee has already made the local pop space sit up and listen thanks to her incredible singles ‘Dysfunctional’ and ‘Wild Hearts’, the latter which also landed her first sync placement in an episode of the US TV series Good Trouble in August 2021. Now, the singer is back with brand-new music as she drops ‘DeLorean’ – and we’ve got the official premiere!
The song alludes to the time-travelling qualities of the eponymous vehicle that featured in the cult-classic ‘Back to the Future’ movies that riveted an entire generation in the 80s. This is the final single the artist will release before launching her EP, ‘Past Midnight’, in January 2022.
“’DeLorean’ is about the nostalgia of wanting to go back to a simpler time -a time before COVID. We are currently locked into a way of living where a lot of people feel like it’s the apocalypse and the outside world has almost become like our enemy in a way. It can feel like we are in a Sci-Fi movie, and we can’t help but wonder what life would be like if we could travel back in time in a DeLorean and change the future to good,” she explains.
The simple, yet wonderfully effective visual that accompanies the track shows the artist reclining in a tub fully clothed, staring point blank at the viewer while she delivers the lyrics, as a timer ticks on relentlessly, perched on the edge of the bath. The unsettling point of view shifts and tilts continuously, never quite allowing the viewer to relax.
DeLorean is a very timeous take on the restlessness and anxiety many of us feel in the midst of the lingering levels of lockdown and pandemic fatigue. It reminds us of the fact that time ticks backwards in our minds, and forwards on our watches, so in the end all we really have is now –this moment, this second right here.
