If you were one of the 250 000 people who witnessed Ed Sheeran’s incredible ‘Divide World Tour’ in the country over the past week, you would have had the pleasure of witnessing British singer Passenger open for the global superstar. The response to his opening act have been so overwhelming that Big Concerts today announced that Passenger will be back in South Africa this November for two solo shows.
Passenger, otherwise known as Michael Rosenberg, released his latest studio album ‘Runaway’ in August last year which went on to peak at number six on the UK Album Charts. The album finds Passenger embracing the epic once again: the melodies are unforgettable, the choruses colossal. The album, Rosenberg’s tenth in 11 years, was recorded between the UK and Australia with his co-producer, Chris Vallejo, but its aesthetic is North American. Some of the lyrics refer to specific locations, such as Detroit or Yellowstone. “My Dad is American,’ Rosenberg explains “and we used to go over every other summer when we were kids. I always loved it”.
Passenger’s biggest hit is undoubtedly the radio hit ‘Let Her Go’ which has hit over two billion views on the star’s official YouTube channel. The song scored Passenger the prestigious Ivor Novello award and helped him become a household name around the world.
Passenger had an incredible time supporting Ed Sheeran on his local tour and he’s excited about returning to the country later this year to perform a longer, more focused set for his fans. “I had the most incredible time opening up for Ed in South Africa. I couldn’t believe how lovely the crowd were and the response online has been completely insane! I really can’t wait to come back and play my own shows in November,” he says.
