The local DJ scene is buzzing with new and exciting talent and we can’t get enough of Sean Taylor. Since he released his smash hit single ‘Salus’, the DJ has been on the lips of every fan of the genre. El caught up with the DJ and got to know how he started his journey, ‘Salus’ and advice for those who want a career as a DJ.
How did your DJing career start?
It all started in about 2007, when my high school friend bought a pair of Pioneer CDJ 100’s. We would go back to his house after school and mix tracks for hours on end. I then progressed to DJ at a few local clubs and parties, taking that very seriously, until I discovered some production software in about 2010. From there I directed my focus at creating music and it’s been a non-stop venture ever since!
What attracted you to the music industry?
It’s always been a big interest of mine, how music can create different emotions and change people’s moods. This industry is a truly unique and inspiring one, where people are doing what they love and a lot of emotion and passion goes into their work. I am one of the same and this is why the industry appealed to me so much.
Your single ‘Salus’ became a huge hit. What inspired the song?
I was going through a bit of a challenging time personally when I wrote that song, I tried to capture some of those feelings and emotions into the production of the track so people could in a sense feel what I was feeling. It kind of just flowed naturally from there and became what it is today.
Melissa Truebody featured on the song. What was it like working with her?
Melissa is a really easy-going and extremely talented individual. Her passion and dedication to music is incomparable and it made working with her an absolute pleasure. I instantly knew whilst making the track Salus that she was the perfect vocalist for the track and that we would produce something great together. She definitely has a bright future ahead of her!
What is the most challenging part of being a DJ?
I think the most challenging part is practicing patience and persistence. It takes a long time and a lot of perseverance to improve your craft and to start seeing results. Learning to focus on one step at a time and not be impatient has been my biggest lesson through this all.
So many youngesters want to become a DJ. What advice do you have for them?
It’s pretty simple, try not to compare yourselves to other artists, create your own unique style and be yourself. DJ and produce what you love because if you are passionate about what you’re doing, it will undoubtedly shine through. Also learn how to take criticism and never give up!
What can we expect from you over the next few months?
My plan for the next few months is to keep persevering with my productions and musical progress. I am constantly aiming to improve my expertise and gain as much knowledge as I can with regards to all things music. I have a number of new projects in the works with some very talented people, so you’ll definitely be hearing some more big tracks and collaborations coming from me soon!
