Off The Record With: Johnny Cradle

They’ve only just released their debut album but Johnny Cradle have been rocking the local live music scene for a few years already. The group has just released their debut album after signing with Just Music and continues to deliver some incredible live elements to their signature pop/R&B sound. The album has been a decade in the making and the group is proving they are a force to be reckoned with. This week, Sakumi Qumana opens up about the band’s beginnings, the album and their new single ‘Runaweyi’.

How did the band come about?

Laz and I met in Cape Town a few years ago and we started playing small shows around the city. I later moved to Jozi while Laz stayed in Cape Town. Fast forward another few years, I met Tebogo at a gig. I was playing in Maboneng and found out that he is a drummer. I asked him to join the band and by that time Laz had also made his move to Johannesburg. We’ve been rocking since 2016 as this current outfit.

Johnny Cradle is an interesting name for the group. How did that name come to life?

It’s just a made up name that represents the idea of a person who is as comfortable being ratchet as he is being socially conscious.

What, in your opinion, makes the band unique?

We are not concerned about genres and putting too much thought in how the music will be received when we make it. We are just expressing our energy and having fun while doing it and hopefully that resonates with our audience.

You’ve just released your debut self-titled album. Tell us about why this record is the perfect introduction to the band.

The debut Johnny Cradle album represents all the sides of what love means to us at the moment – being better men to our families, being carefree but socially responsible citizens, the art of getting over heart break and just a collection of different types of energy put into music for a feel good vibe.

Your single ‘Runaweyi’ is a fan-favourite. What inspired the single?

Sometimes your best is not enough in a relationship and your partner threatens to leave because she says she deserves better. Sometimes, you simply need bid her farewell and that heartache inspired the track.

Your music is very conversational and quite deep. What do you want your listeners to take away after hearing your music?

Johnny Cradle is like self-hype get yourself and your friends up and running. You love your partner? Take her or him out and have a good time and show her just how much you appreciate her. You’re heartbroken? Go out and break a few hearts yourself for a minute. Feeling under-appreciated? Let them know that no one does it better than you and leave them standing where you used to be. It’s a love and belief in yourself system that we are selling.

Now that the album is out, what does the rest of the year hold for you?
