Nick Jonas blew me away with his previous self-titled album. The record saw Nick release the smash hits Jealous, Levels, Chains and many more and the star has since been in studio working on both his follow-up record and an American tour with former flame, Demi Lovato. Now, Nick has dropped the lead single off his upcoming album – a track called Close with features guest vocals by Swedish songstress, Tove Lo.
The song is heavily R&B influenced and sees Nick explore the sound of his previous album even deeper. The track has a heavy production and sleek, smooth vocals by Jonas. The song is incredibly sexy and the chemistry between the singer and Tove Lo is clear. Nick says that the song is “about how I literally can’t open up and be vulnerable with someone” and he executes the song perfectly. The instrumentals are beautifully crafted and there is so much detail in every sound that comes out of this song.
The track is fantastic and I see myself playing this on repeat for the next few weeks. Nick and Tove Lo also dropped one of the best music videos of the year to this song. The video shows the two sitting in chairs in a large room while Nick’s chair moves closer and further away from Tove Lo. Then, their clothes start to slowly unravel as they finally get ‘close’. The video is beautifully directed and reminds me a lot of the recent videos Sia dropped.
On the upcoming album, Nick reveals he has put his all into it. “I’ve been making this record for a year and a half, pouring everything I have into it. When I first started making I thought I knew what it would be about…Then I had a breakup.” He added that “It then became very clear what this thing would be about…And that I would need to dig really deep. Shit is too real sometimes. Reliving some of these real life experiences through this music is hard. But I know it’s important that I do it. I want to be an open book in my art.”
