Local pop crooner Nic Billington is certainly an artist who beats to his own drum. After dropping his latest single ‘You Get Me High’ in December last year, the singer is back with new music this week as he premieres ‘Without A Warning’.
Penned by Billington, Paul Gala and Mia van Wyk, the dark retro Synthwave inspired single sheds light on issues surrounding mental health and serves as a stark reminder that appearances at face value can be deceiving.
Produced on a bed on distorted basslines, a sound Nic has found his groove in, ‘Without A Warning’ is a personal song inspired by the anxiety, depression and low self-esteem Nic has felt during his life. He explains that the song speaks about the inner turmoil of the mind.
“Because I’m such a private person, I would hate to give the impression that my life is perfect. I don’t always have it all together and that’s something we never show over social media. We’re constantly comparing ourselves to this filtered life that we see on Instagram and it’s so detrimental to our psyche,” Nic explains “I decided to open up about my struggles to show that anyone can fall victim to mental illness. Which is why it’s important for people to be mindful of how they treat others because it can unknowingly harm a person’s well-being.”
Fans have become accustomed to striking music videos accompanying the star’s music and this time is no different. In the track’s official music video, Nic displays scenes of chaos, constriction and distress. The singer describes the self-directed and produced visual as a beautifully dark and turbulent representation of someone that is at war with their own mind.
