There’s a hot DJ on the local music front who is making waves internationally. Muzi has just signed an exciting deal with Sony Music Africa which saw him drop his debut album ‘Boom Shaka’ last week. Currently living in Berlin, Muzi has gained worldwide recognition as the future of South African electronic music and has received the nod from the likes of Grime Rapper Stormzy, Diplo (and his label Mad Decent), The Prodigy, Vice magazine, Noisey, and Rinse FM. Now, as he starts promotion on his new EP, the DJ has released his debut single ‘Ekhaya’ – and it’s fire!
The track is an awesome mix of electronic music and deep house and instantly captures the attention of the listener. The song has a lovely blend of local and international influences. The production is incredible and although parts remind me of Dizzee Rascal and Calvin’s new single ‘Hype’, the song is interesting, fresh and different. I liked the minimalistic use of lyrics on the track although vocals still formed an integral part of the production. Although this isn’t something that has commercial appeal, it’s definitely a track that will set clubs around the country on fire.
Muzi is currently making tearing up the clubs around South Africa and in Berlin and, much like the single, his new EP blends African influences with genres such as electronic, trap and house. Muzi named his new EP ‘Boom Shaka’ after one of the most seminal Kwaito acts to come out of South Africa that set a whole generation of youth ablaze with their music. Driven by a strong youth consciousness Muzi has followed in the footsteps of the act and deeply connected to all the major social upheavals affecting the youth, such as #FEESMUSTFALL.
