ALTHOUGH only recently released to the South African market, Sunrise, Louise Carver’s collaboration with American DJ Joe Bermudez has been taking the American dance market by storm. Now, after weeks of climbing, the track has reached the top of the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. The chart celebrates the week’s most popular songs played in dance clubs, compiled from reports from a national sample of club DJs, meaning that Sunrise was the most played song in American clubs this week, beating out the likes of Rihanna and Zayn.
As the two celebrate this impressive achievement, we sat down with Louise shortly after she found out that she had pushed Rihanna from the number one spot and she opened up about what the single means to her, working with Joe Bermudez and how she felt the moment she found out her single took the number one position.
Congrats on reaching number one on the Billboard Dance Charts! What went through your head when you found out?
When I heard that Joe and I were number 1 on the Billboard charts this week, I literally screamed in shock. It doesn’t feel real to knock Rihanna off the number 1 spot! I am trying to just enjoy the moment and appreciate this really incredible gift!
The song has clearly been incredibly well received in the US. How has the song’s journey been stateside so far?
Sunrise has taken me on a magical journey that I still can’t quite believe has happened. It’s now 11 weeks on the Billboard charts and it makes me deeply happy that people are loving it, as it is a dance song with a lot of heart and soul. I was in the States for three weeks and performed to crowds of 10 000 – it was exhilarating to see people sing the song back to me.
What inspired Sunrise?
It’s a song that encompasses many emotions – hope, sadness, nostalgia, regret for love that has gone wrong. A sunrise in nature represents a new day, a clean slate and the possibility that anything can happen.
You met Joe Bermudez after he was in the country and heard your vocals on a Pascal & Pearce track. How has your relationship developed since?
I stay with Joe when I’m in Boston, so we have become good friends. Joe is all about creating his own samples from scratch and spends hundreds of hours perfecting the production. It’s so wonderful to meet someone who cares about the music as much as I do. I really have found a kindred spirit in Joe.
A number one track on the Billboard Dance Chart is no easy feat. What does this achievement mean for your career going forward?
I have no idea what the future holds, but Joe and I are currently working on the follow up single (I recorded the vocals whilst in Boston a month ago), and I will need to go over again soon to perform and promote Sunrise. I am also working with amazing songwriters in New York (Michael Tighe works with Mark Ronson and has done work with Adele) and I have connected with a wonderful publishing company, who love my writing style. Promise to keep you updated!
That’s exciting! Does this mean we can we expect an album soon?
Yes, I have been working with the incredible producer Mark Beling (of Mean Mr Mustard fame) for over a year now on my 6th studio album. I am so excited to release the new single and album – it really has been the most incredible experience working with Mark and I know fans are going to love the new songs. We will release the album in October this year.
