It’s been an exciting year for Loki Rothman. He dropped his debut album ‘The Way Back’ in June last year which included the smash hits ‘Light These Fires’, ‘Clocks’ and ‘Under The Stars’ and was ultimately nominated in the Best Pop category at this year’s South African Music Awards. Now, the singer releases a new Afrikaans single titled ‘Ons Op Ons Eie’ – the lead single off the upcoming film ‘Jou Romeo’.
The song is Loki’s first Afrikaans release and one he is very excited about releasing. The track has an interesting mix of electronic, dance and acoustic elements which Loki has often experimented with on his music. His unique approach has made this an incredibly unique song that is bound to stand out.
Loki admitted that when the film’s producer, Dries Scholtz, asked him to compose an entirely original soundtrack for the film and he jumped at the opportunity to get involved. “Dries asked me to produce original music for ‘Jou Romeo.’ It was challenging to write a whole series of songs by using only the visual material from the film as a reference. I couldn’t write just anything because the lyrics and melody had to blend in with what happens on screen,” Loki says.
The star adds that he has created something for everyone on the soundtrack – one he is excited for the country to hear but while he doesn’t lend his voice to all the tracks, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to release ‘Ons Op Ons Eie’ as his debut Afrikaans single. “The songs are divided in such a way that half of it are English and the other half Afrikaans and various singers were used for each track. The last song that I wrote, ‘Ons Op Ons Eie’, was my favourite and I really wanted to sing it myself,” he says. “This song was also my first original Afrikaans single that was released. It’s something completely new to me as an artist and to those who know my previous music, even though the production and sound quality still resonates to that of my first album.” The song will appear on the film’s soundtrack and is also available on the Afrikaans is Groot Vol. 9 album which currently available in music stores.
While the song starts run on radio stations across the country, fans will have to wait a little while longer to see the film. ‘Jou Romeo’ will release in cinemas around South Africa on the 23rd of December. The film tells a story of Marko Marais, the most popular guy at Hoërskool Monument, and Yvette, the drama geek. When Romeo and Juliet, the play that Yvette and her best friend Tyler have been planning since the eighth grade, gets jeopardised by the sports-fanatic principal, Mister Kirby Potgieter who cuts the arts and culture budget, Yvette decides to call in Marko’s help. But, she doesn’t have Marko’s best interest at heart. Yvette later realizes that there is more to him than just being a jock with a charming smile and loads of fans and Marko also starts seeing the fiery redhead from a different perspective. The teen love story is set to be one of the biggest local releases at the box office this December and with a lovely story and fantastic music, this is a film I’m excited to see.
