There is no one doing it like Lil Nas X does. The star dropped his debut album ‘Montero’ earlier this month and made a massive debut at number two on the Billboard 200 chart but while we find ourselves continuously singing along to ‘Industry Baby’ and ‘That’s What I Want’, it’s his country hit ‘Old Town Road’ that really put the star on the map.
Now, in a new performance for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, Lil Nas X returns to his country roots as he covers Dolly Parton’s 1974 smash hit ‘Jolene’ – and it’s everything we hoped it would be.
The song has famously been covered by the likes of Miley Cyrus and the White Stripes and now, it’s the rapper’s turn to put a spin on the heartbreak anthem. Lil Nas X, who is openly gay, gives the cover new meaning as he takes the country classic written from the point of view of a straight woman and adapt it seamlessly to that of a queer love story.
Naturally, fans were stoked with Lil Nas X’s song choice. “I love everything about this. His voice. His fit. The mic with flowers. The band. EVERYTHING,” one fan wrote. “Lil Nas X’s versatility is what is he is going to be remembered for!” another added. “He is such a well-rounded artist and I cannot get enough,” a third fan said.
