Local DJ and music maestro Kid Fonque announced earlier this year that he would be hanging up his headphones at 5FM after six years of hosting the legendary Selective Styles show as he moves to the UK as Head of A&R at dance label Defected Labels.
Fonque, real name Allan Nicoll, was also a Label Manager at Soul Candi Records before he announced his new career move.
“I’m very proud to announce that I’m in London, United Kingdom to take up my new role as Head Of A&R at the biggest dance music label on the planet, Defected Records,” Kid Fonque announced via his social media pages. “This comes off the back of making Mzansi musicians my area of expertise – along with complimentary international sounds via my Selective Sounds radio show on 5FM and my record labels Stay True Sounds & STY TRU BTS.”
Simon Dunmore, Defected Founder, adds “I have been impressed with Allan since his days at Soul Candi and his progress as Stay True Sounds label owner and Selective Styles radio presenter dovetail perfectly into Defected’s existing structure. Moving from South Africa to relocate in London shows real commitment I am excited by the prospect of working alongside him.”
Current owner Wez Saunders adds: “I am delighted to be welcoming Allan aka Kid Fonque to the Defected Team. As we continue to reshape the Music Team alongside Simon Dunmore (in his new A&R Consultancy capacity).”
For over two decades, Nicoll has played a vital role in South African electronic music and club culture where he has moved from DJ, promoter/producer to label manager and radio/TV host. From humble beginnings as a DJ in the yard of the Legendary 206 in Johannesburg, he exploded into the go-to guy for Mzansi’s deep house and electronic rhythms.
“I am truly looking forward to this incredible new chapter of my life and having you all join me on this new journey,” Fonque concludes.
