Kanye West has become a legend. His music and videos always seem to be ahead of our time and that’s why MTV have chosen to honour him at this year’s Video Music Awards by giving him VMA’s highest honour, the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.” The rapper will receive the award based on his incredible music, mind-blowing videos, his legendary VMA performances, and continued impact on music, art, fashion, and culture. The award will be presented to him during the award ceremony which will be screened at 03h00 on Monday morning on MTV (DSTV channel 130).
Kanye’s videos have always pushed the limit. His brilliant trilogy of videos for ‘Jesus Walks’ to the animation for ‘Heartless’ and even the Kim Kardashian-assisted video for ‘Bound 2’ has had the world talking. Kanye is a true artist with vision and brings out the best of his music with these epic videos. Kanye is also known for gracing the VMA stage with brilliant performances such as 2013’s “Blood on the Leaves”, “Otis” with JAY Z in 2011, the innovative, theatrical staging and visuals of “Runaway” in 2010, his performance debut with auto-tune on “Love Lockdown” in 2008, the hugely influential, Daft Punk-sampling “Stronger” and “Good Life” with T-Pain in 2007, the mega-hit “Gold Digger” featuring Jamie Foxx in 2005, and his VMA debut performance with a medley of “Jesus Walks/All Falls Down/Through The Wire” featuring Chaka Khan in 2004.
The rapper will join Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Guns N’ Roses, Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and BEYONCÉ who have taken home this presigious award in the past. This year’s show, hosted by Miley Cyrus, promises to be one of the best to date. Amongst the award-giving, artists such as The Weeknd, Pharrell, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, A$AP Rocky and Twenty One Pilots will be gracing the stage.
