Earlier this year, Janie Bay released her impressive debut studio album ‘Miscellany’. The album is her first major label release after inking a deal with Warner Music South Africa and after the album’s lead single ‘Better Off’ had a successful run on radio, the star has teamed up with Die Heuwel Fantasties’ Hunter Kennedy for her new Afrikaans single ‘Wag Vir Jou’.
The moody love song is a different sonic approach to music compared to other Afrikaans pop stars – and the risk pays off for Janie. The song sees Janie and Hunter questioning their relationship stamina and the result is an honest, emotional piece of work. The subtle tropical elements over the dark pop beat makes sees the track stick to the trend pop music has gravitated towards and the star’s ability to adapt this to a local market should be commended. Her chemistry with Hunter works nicely as well. The two seem to bounce off each other and it makes for a very interesting listen.
“‘Wag Vir Jou’ is a nice summer jam but it’s also a meaningful song,” Janie tells us. “We liked the topic of loving and appreciating the ones you are with and not taking advantage of them.” The star was also thrilled to be working alongside Hunter Kennedy on the song. “I’ve known Hunter for quite some time and we’ve been wanting to write something together for ages and the opportunity came up so we grabbed it. We wanted to mush together a few different genres. You can hear a few house influences, some African and kwaito beats and we’re really proud of this release.”
The star released a beautifully-shot music video to accompany the single. “I really wanted people to feel the lyrics in the song through the video,” Janie shares. “I also wanted people to write their own story regarding the content in the video and to get some beautiful, moody shots. I am really excited for people see it!”
