Gwen Stefani released a major comeback album earlier this year. Not only did This Is What the Truth Feels Like drop almost 10 years after her previous album The Sweet Escape, but it’s also her most personal album yet. On the record she explores the feelings she had before, during and after her divorce to Gavin Rossdale and her new-found love – Blake Shelton. The album has already spawned singles Used To Love You and Make Me Like You, and now the The Voice coach has chosen Misery as the third single.
The song may just be her most radio-friendly single off the album yet. It’s incredibly catchy with a great hook, emotive chorus and honest lyrics, in which Gwen shows off more of her personal story. Production-wise, although a pop song, the producers have left out the bells and whistles and let Gwen’s voice be the star of the show. The claps and simple synths don’t overpower the song and I love that.
Misery is also left to interpretation and it is not clear if Gwen is singing about Gavin or Blake. However, the song is authentic and those raw emotions are evident throughout the song. This Is What the Truth Feels Like is a fantastic album from Gwen and we’re glad she has chosen a deeper, more meaningful album as she makes her comeback. Being able to deal through issues through music – and good music – makes Gwen a true artist.
