He stole our hearts with his golden voice on The Voice South Africa earlier this year as he was crowned the first season’s runner-up and a few short weeks after the show came to an end, Gavin Edwards released his debut single ‘Sparks’. The reception to Gavin’s debut single has been phenomenal. The song shot to the top of the South African iTunes charts the day after release and has been playlisted on major radio stations around the country.
The track is pop perfection. It reminds me a lot of something OneRepublic or The Script would release and is definitely the direction Gavin should take with his music. His vocals are clear, powerful and demand attention. The production is simple and the chorus is catchy – the perfect recipe for a great pop track. If he keeps this up, Gavin could become one of the biggest names in South African pop music.
Gavin has just released the track’s official video and, like the song, it’s simple yet effective. “I can’t believe the video is done! It was just the other day that I was sitting at Universal Music talking about the song, and then it shot to number 1, started playing all over radio and now the video’s out! It’s surreal. It’s the first video that I’ve ever done and I’m excited and nervous. Now for the album… exciting times!” says Gavin. The singer is currently in studio working on his upcoming album which is due for release in September. Out of the four The Voice South Africa contestants who have released singles, Gavin’s is definitely my favourite.
