EXCLUSIVE: Lakota Silva Talks New Single ‘Darlin’: “Heartbreak Is Never An Easy Subject”

Lakota Silva has come a long way since she released her debut album ‘POP: The Mixtape’ last year. The album spawned six hit singles such as ‘Do Re Mi’, ‘Sweatt’ and ‘Sunshine’ and was nominated for a South African Music Award in the Best Pop category earlier this year. However, as the album’s era comes to an end, the singer has been experimenting in the studio and launches her new single ‘Darlin’ with Tristan Carmichael this Friday.

The singer has almost reinvented her sound with this single. While the track certainly falls within the pop genre, there are much darker elements blended with a strong dance beat and a melodic chorus made of chopped up vocal pieces. This time around, Lakota teamed up with up-and-coming producer Tristan Carmichael on the track and the new material shows just how much she has grown creatively since releasing her album. “For me, music is a very personal thing so it’s important to have someone I can trust while creating,” Lakota says on her chemistry with Tristan. “He is also a great musician so we can play around on instruments for hours just writing or drafting ideas or banking vocals!”

The singer adds that she poured her heart and soul into the song and wanted it to be one of her most honest pieces of music yet. “I was more vulnerable writing this track,” she explains. “Heartbreak is never an easy subject but I feel it’s only fair to be completely real, relatable and transparent for both the fans and myself. The lyrics speak of a love lost and dealing with it. It inspires me everyday. I love what the song became. I feel it’s the perfect transition into the next part of my journey.”

Speaking of the next part of her journey, Lakota isn’t rushing into a new album just yet. In fact, the success of her debut record has set the bar incredibly high. “‘POP: The Mixtape’ had six radio singles, so it’s a high bar to achieve – I want to make sure there will be the least six singles off a body of work of mine. I am in the writing process of the new album and I have some absolute gems, however, I can’t tell you when you can expect a new album just yet.”

In the meantime, Lakota is incredibly excited for the country to hear the new single when it drops on iTunes this Friday. Other than the new single, the star has been keeping herself quite busy. After the fantastic response she got to a recent cover of Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’, Lakota hopes to do a few more covers in the months to come and has been spending a lot of time in the studio. “Apart from releasing ‘Darlin’, I’ve been writing for some artists from Johannesburg, performing when and where I can, engaging in the everyday hustle – and because I love what I do, that’s okay!”

The new Lakota Silva chapter begins this Friday – and it’s something you should all be really excited about. Rememeber to buy the track on iTunes and support the incredible talent we have in South Africa.
