2019 has been a fantastic year for local pop duo Easy Freak. Their 2018 smash ‘Good Times’ has continued its success into 2019 and the duo’s latest single ‘cometogether/uzobona’ has showed fans that they have so much more up their sleeve than what they’d previously shown. Now, two years after the release of their debut album ‘I’m Alright’, Easy Freak dropped their second studio album ‘no LIES’.
Easy Freak’s Jude Kendrick says that the album was written throughout 2018 and was largely inspired by the group’s move from Durban to Johannesburg. “The move up to Jozi meant a lot of good change for us; one being that we had a lot more time to put into our music,” he says. “We feel like we’re improving as songwriters and producers and being in Jozi, broadening our reach into new communities and circles; that’s definitely inspired us. We’re in an exciting space as a group and we feel that it comes through in this album.”
The album is significantly different from their 2017 debut ‘I’m Alright’ and it’s been a real treat seeing Easy Freak push boundaries and experiment with their sound on this project. The duo throws away the rule book and opted to simply create music they love. This freedom shows in both their musical direction as well as their storytelling. They’ve found a space within the electronic, pop and dance space which they’re comfortable in – and it’s been a beautiful transition to watch.
“We always want to make people feel something with our music; we definitely feel like that’s gonna happen with ‘no LIES’,” Jude continues. “We were privileged enough to collaborate with some of our favourite locals artists such as Darkie Fiction, Robin Thirdfloor and Muzi and we haven’t been this excited about a release before. We can’t wait for people to hear what we’ve been working on. We really believe in the music we’ve written and we honestly love each and every song; we hope that everybody who listens to it does as well. We were able to stretch our musicality with this album which made it incredibly fun for us; we hope that the listeners can appreciate that too.”
