When Joe Jonas first announced that he was forming a new group DNCE and showed off the band’s quirky look, we immediately thought it was a gimmick in order for him to stay relevant. However, the group dropped a short 4-track EP and debut single Cake By The Ocean became a massive hit. We then thought these guys would be a one-hit-wonder but after hearing their new single, we think that the future looks rather bright for these guys.
The song, titled Toothbrush, is the perfect follow-up. The song still has the DNCE identity they created with Cake By The Ocean, yet it still shows off an entirely new side of the group. The sound reminds me of the new stuff Joe’s brother Nick Jonas has been releasing lately yet still sticking to the pop genre entirely. Vocally, Joe explores his higher register and sounds a lot like Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. The song is cheeky, playful and catchy as hell. The song also proves that sometimes a simple beat and production is exactly what a song needs to be a hit.
Joe and the rest of the group definitely have something special on their hands and the music they’re releasing is definitely the type of music they should be releasing to become a commercial success. The song appears on their EP Swaay and will also be included in their upcoming debut album.
