The Chainsmokers have had a massive few months. Their massive singles ‘Closer’ and ‘Something Just Like This’ have dominated airwaves and despite their disappointing debut album, ‘Memories… Do Not Open’, the group prove that they’ve got what it takes to deliver the hits. Now, as ‘Something Just Like This’ ends it’s run as a single, the duo have picked ‘Honest’ as the next single off the project.
The single is a smart choice because it’s an electro-ballad instead of the pop bangers we’ve become used to from the duo. Unfortunately, despite being a ballad, the song follows the same recipe the group have used on their previous singles. It’s become an incredibly predicable sound and continues the generic, uninspired sound they’ve found comfort in. The song is filled with auto-tune which, for me, takes away from the honesty and emotion of the song. However, it’s not all bad. The song is actually quite catchy and well-written. “It’s 5 a.m. and I’m on the radio, I’m supposed to call you, but I don’t know what to say at all,” Drew Taggart croons as he sings about another girl to a supposed lover. I definitely see this song becoming a hit but their shtick is getting old fast. As a group who have always been ahead of the curve, they need to start experimenting again.
