This past weekend was a fantastic weekend for local rapper Cassper Nyovest. On Saturday 1 December he filled up Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium in the latest of his ‘Fill Up’ franchises and the very next day, he performed to over 80 000 fans at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in Johannesburg.
While the Durban event looked like a massive success, the rapper revealed that he, in fact, lost a lot of money producing the show as he and his manager, Lerato ‘TLee” Moiloa took to Twitter to share the news with their fans.
Cassper reveals that “There was a rumour that came out that apparently, we got R56 million and that’s where everything started. So, it then made all the sponsors that are corporate, that wanted to sponsor us, pull out. So, right now I’m sitting with a R7 million bill that I have to kind of figure out with me and my team.”
Meanwhile, TLee says that “What we experienced organising #FillUp in Durban was the most difficult, scary & painful experience of our careers. Threatened almost daily, not just concert cancelled but our lives. Before he jumped on stage instead of praying, myself & kid just cried. God saved #FillUp.”
Cassper reveals that the many Durban sponsors pulled out of the show at the last minute leaving him with the hefty debt. “It was tough. I saw my manager cry for the first time. Just before I got on stage, as we were praying he broke down. That’s when I told myself “CASSPER , ITS YOUR TURN TO CARRY THE TEAM NOW”. The next day we killed the global citizen show. Blessed and favoured,” the rapper continued.
However, the weekend also saw the star release his brand-new album ‘Sweet & Short’ which has been positively received by fans. Here’s hoping the future is brighter than ever for the star as he continues to put South African hip-hop on the map and breaking records doing so.
