Olivia Rodrigo is easily one of the most successful artists of 2021. Her debut album ‘Sour’ is one of the highest-selling records of the year and singles ‘drivers licence’, ‘déjà vu’ and ‘good 4 u’ have become instant classics. So, when pop star Camila Cabello, who just released her comeback single ‘Don’t Go Yet’, was asked to perform a cover for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, the choice was easy.
As with all of her music, Camila gave her performance of ‘good 4 u’ a Latin-American twist as she added various cumbia elements to her cover. Camila performed the cover over a wedding ceremony backdrop surrounded by white flowers while wearing a white dress bedazzled with lush black feathers, with her band in smart black jackets.
Just before performing the track, Cabello shared just how much she enjoys Rodrigo’s music, which is why she selected ‘good 4 u’ as the cover she performed. “[I’m] So excited to perform this. I love that song,” Cabello explained. “I think she’s a really amazing artist and I love so many of the songs that she’s released, so yeah I’m happy to do this song in a new way. We were really inspired by, obviously, Latin music and making it kind of like a cumbia version.”
“I feel like she’s such an incredible vocalist, Cabello continued. “This song was a challenging song to practice. It’s really high and demands a lot of breath, and I was excited to do it because I like her punk rock vibe.”
‘good 4 u’ was the third single off Rodrigo’s debut album ‘Sour’ and was released in May this year.
