The Hustle winner BigStar Johnson released his impressive debut album ‘Me & Mines’ just a few short weeks ago and the album has already received positive reviews from critics and fans. The star was determined to release his most personal body of work to date and his willingness to open up to his fans is something that helps the album stand out.
“For me, the album had to be real. It had to be authentic. It couldn’t sound like anybody else. I put my all into this body of work and wore my heart on my sleeve. This is my story and I am so excited to share it with the world,” the rapper tells us.
The star goes on to explain the music creation process which, for him, needs to start with intent. “First, I figure out what I am trying to say and the story I want to share and then I get the music right,” the rapper continues. “From there, it’s about putting pen to paper. My music is always about the message and the vibe – it’s never just about the vibe and I think that makes me stand out.”
The album touches on subjects such as growing up, friendship, kinship, fatherhood and the ‘good old days’. “Currently I’m at a place where I’m the most comfortable that I’ve ever been in the industry. And I’m finally at a place where I feel I can express myself, so I’m hella excited about the future and what it holds for me,” BigStar Johnson says.
The 12-track album features collaborations from the likes of Kaylo, Rouge, Zoocci Coke Dope, Jay Claude and Kwesta who features on the album’s lead single ‘Sgubu’. “Working with Kwesta was dope. He is one of the realest artists in the country and we had a great time bringing this song to life,” he adds.
