On his new solo adventure, Ben Dey, from Ben Dey and the Concrete Lions, is doing some serious soul searching while creating music that is both impactful and entertaining. As he embarks on this exciting chapter of his career, the star released ‘Natural Mystic’, a cover of the classic Bob Marley track as the first taste off his upcoming album but it’s his new single ‘Honour’ that has really made us sit up and listen.
In a unique approach, ‘Honour’ is the next and first single in a series of original tracks from Ben Dey to be unveiled every two weeks leading up to the release of his upcoming album ‘In Flow’, which drops 26 November.
‘Honour’ is incredibly special because Ben celebrates his African heritage on the track while telling a story that means so much to him. However, while this has been done before, the production on ‘Honour’ doesn’t feel forced. Adding tropical elements on top of African beats and sounds has created an organic piece of music that is easily relatable to listeners across the country.
The song pays homage to indigenous wisdoms. It reminds us to look deeper into the invisible architecture of life, as despite the lure of materialism, true meaning and purpose are often found in the intangible.
“It is a great pleasure to feature my friends, the ‘Mutual Brothers’, on the track”, says Ben. Ben met the producer duo during his stay in Limpopo and worked with them on a few songs, some of which have now been included on the songwriter’s upcoming album, ‘In Flow’.
The new album embraces Sepedi folklore, bringing light to a rich culture and people. Roots of reggae, folk, soul and flow house hug in harmony, pioneering a sound, unique and endemic to the African continent.
