It’s the film almost everyone went to watch this past weekend and in doing so, Warner Bros’ Batman V Superman broke some South African records. The film opened around the world on the 24th of March and was screened on 137 screens around South Africa making over R16 million at the local box office.
This makes Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the biggest Warner Bros. opening of all time in South Africa, the biggest March opener of all time and the second biggest 3-day opening weekend (Fri – Sun) behind Fast & Furious 7.
Not only did fans of both superheroes flock to cinemas to route for their favourite character in this epic film but it also introduced Wonder Woman and set the scene for a few more superhero films coming from DC Comics soon.
Sue Dickinson, Warner Bros. Marketing Manager at Times Media Films said, “Anticipation for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been building across South Africa and these incredible results are a testament to not only the enduring appeal of these global icons but the power of the epic cinematic showdown Zack Snyder and his brilliant cast and crew have delivered. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the film’s incredible debut and strong word-of-mouth and repeat business promises to propel its success well into the season.”
I went to watch the film on IMAX this weekend and I was blown away by the quality of both the visuals and sound. The film has received quite a few bad reviews but, in all honesty, I loved the film. Sure, it was a bit too long but overall, I enjoyed it. Congrats to the teams involved and this, once again, proves that superhero movies are as popular as ever.
