Backstage At Singin’ In The Rain

image3

As mentioned in my review, I loved the production of Singin’ In The Rain now on at The Teatro, Montecasino. So much so that I went to watch it again recently. The show was just as brilliant as the first time and I could honestly even go watch it a third time. However, this time was even more special as not only did I sit in the very front row, I got a special backstage tour. Naturally, I’m brining you along for the ride.

Sitting in the front row means you get wet. A lot. Luckily, ponchos are provided for your convenience and they're so much fun to wear!

There is a lot of equipment backstage. Everything needs to run perfectly so while you're enjoying the production, the team is hard at work making sure nothing goes wrong. This is just half of the sound equipment used to make sure you can hear the actors and orchestra on stage.

There are a lot of props used in the show and to get them on and off the stage quickly, they're positioned in places that are easily accessible.

Speaking of props, the team went above and beyond to make sure that every little thing is perfect - and it seemed they spared no expense in doing so. This attention to detail is just one of the things that makes this production so good.

Another aspect that was perfectly executed in the show was the costumes. There are a variety of dressing rooms backstage and the actors head to different ones depending on the time they have before getting back on stage. The costumes and wigs are phenomenal and so much care was used in both the pieces that get soaking wet and the ones that remain dry.

The stairway above the stage where the orchestra perform. Besides the great production, the music was definitely a standout. Probably the best music in any production I have ever seen.

There are so many props used in the show and since it has travelled all around the world, they're packed in cases and are shipped on a container to the show's next destination. Unfortunately, Singin' In The Rain's last stop is here in Johannesburg.

The rain scenes are the highlight of the show - and this production translates the scene so perfectly that it is as if it is really raining in the theatre. To execute this, there are huge water tanks backstage which are connected to pipes which transport the water up to the sprinkler system.

The crew needed to find a way to collect the water once the scene is over. That's why they created this special stage made of a special plastic. The water then seeps through and is collected and, after a while, the floor is dry again.

After the big finale, all the umbrellas are put out to dry - and the stage looks so cool with them all spread out at once.

You can't do a backstage tour of the show and now take your very own pic with one of the umbrellas, right?
