Local punk rock group CrashCarBurn made their highly-anticipated return to music earlier this year with their impressive comeback single ‘Summer Forever’ and subsequently released ‘Headlights’ – their first album in six years. Now, the group has just dropped the second single off the project – and it’s an epic cover of Tom Petty’s massive hit single ‘Free Fallin’’.
According to the group, the idea of doing a cover of the song came about last year when Tom Petty passed away. The song was played on many radio stations after the star’s death and reminded the members of CrashCarBurn what a great song it is. So, they decided to put their own spin on the song and record a version for their new album.
What’s really special about CrashCarBurn is that no matter what song (or cover) they tackle, they continuously ensure that they make the song their own and that’s exactly what they did with ‘Free Fallin’’. The cover has a darker sound to it and the instrumentals are on steroids. Lead singer Garth Barnes gives an incredibly strong vocal performance as he slows the song down while adding more raw emotion and angst to the hit track.
“People often ask in interviews: ‘What song do you wish you had written?’ This is the one! But we didn’t write it… so releasing our interpretation of it is the next best thing!” Garth tells us when asked why the band wanted to cover this song specifically. “When we play the track live, it takes the audience, the ones that are not familiar with our version, at least a minute to recognise that it’s ‘Free Fallin’, which is quite fun! Love to see the delight on people’s faces once the penny drops. We just love the way the song turned out.”
Garth adds “It’s always tricky taking on a classic like this, the last thing you want to do is butcher someone’s all-time favourite song! But we’re very, very proud of the way it turned out. It really is one of our best songs on the album. If you’re a CCB fan and you’re not familiar with Tom Petty, I think it ticks all the boxes and you’re gonna love it. If you’re a Tom Petty fan, we hope this version will put an interesting spin on one of your old favourites and hopefully make you rediscover a track you haven’t heard in a while!”
